Tanya Tucker performed her Song of the Year nominee “Bring My Flowers Now” at the 2020 Grammys. Accompanied by Brandi Carlile on piano, the against-the-grain country singer gave an impassioned reading of the song that asks us to celebrate the lives of loved ones while they’re still on earth.
“We all think we’ve got the time until we don’t,” sang Tucker in a lyric that carried particular weight following the death of NBA star Kobe Bryant earlier in the day.
“Bring My Flowers Now” is from Tucker’s Grammy-winning album While I’m Livin‘, which takes its title from a line in the ballad: “Bring my flowers now, while I’m livin’/I won’t need your love when I’m gone.” Tucker co-wrote the song with Carlile and Tim and Phil Hanseroth and it appears as the final track on the singer’s comeback LP, produced by Carlile and Shooter Jennings.
Tucker told Rolling Stone last year that she was initially hesitant to record the album: “I said, ‘Shooter, I don’t think these songs are right for me. I don’t hear no ‘Luckenbach,’ I don’t hear no ‘Delta Dawn.’”
Tucker made a pair of cameos to sing “Bring My Flowers Now” during Carlile’s recent Ryman Auditorium residency, and delivered a stunning version during her own sold-out Ryman concert earlier this month. Along with Song of the Year, she’s nominated for Best Country Album, Best Country Solo Performance and Best Country Song.
Following the Grammy Awards, Tucker will embark on the CMT Next Women of Country Tour, which kicks off February 5th in Vienna, Virginia.
